Trust With All Your Heart

Trust With All Your Heart
Psalm 3:5-6

We’re going to dig into two famous verses today, Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT). I want to give you a chance in this devotion to really apply these two verses to your life.

Let’s start by meditating on our verses today. Grab your Bible and a journal or notebook and something to write with.

Proverbs 3:5–6 (NLT)
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Again, verse 5, Trust. It means to have complete in God. It means to have complete faith in God for what you can’t see, and for what you don’t understand. This trust is stepping out into thin air. This trust is being absolutely convinced that God has got you, and God has got this situation.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart; This word for heart is referring to the very core of your being. It’s the very core of who you are in your thoughts, in your emotions, and in your actions. At the very core of who you are, with all that is within you, trust in the Lord.

[and] do not depend on your own understanding. Do not rely on your own understanding. Do not trust your own understanding. Do not put your confidence in how you see things, or in how you feel about things, or in what you think about things. Cast all of your own everything aside, and fully, completely, trust in and have complete faith in, and complete confidence in the Lord who is at work in all things for your ultimate good and for his ultimate glory. Trust in the Lord with all your heart; [and] do not depend on your own understanding.

And when you are trusting in the Lord with all your heart you will Seek his will in all you do... You will seek his will in all that you do. Let’s not fool ourselves, this is one of the hardest things we will ever learn to do in this life – to truly lay aside our own will, our own thoughts, our own opinions, our own perspective, and our own view of things – to crucify all of that at the very core of our being and to truly seek, not just surrender to but actively seek, purposefully seek God’s will alone. When we get there, when we get to that place, that’s when we’re beginning to understand what it means to truly trust in the Lord with all of [our] heart.

And then, God promises that when we are trusting in him at the core of who we are, and when we are genuinely and actively seeking him in all that we do, then he will show you which path to take. Then he will set your path before you. Then, he will make straight your path.

Now, God is not “Google.” And God is not “Siri.” God’s role in your life is not to speak in a computer voice and tell you to turn left on the next street. The context here is much bigger, and God’s role in our lives is much bigger than him just becoming our heavenly “MapQuest.”

Another translation says, he will make your paths straight. The Hebrew here means, “smooth” or “plain” meaning that God will remove obstacles on the path that he sets you on. But again, don’t lose the context of these verses. Your path is the overall course of your life. It’s made up of all of your actions, and all of your choices. And when we do not trust in the Lord with all of our heart, and we do depend on our own understanding, we place a ton of obstacles in the path that we set for our own lives.

As we have been looking at these verses, has the Holy Spirit brought up anything in your life that these verses directly apply to? Is there some area of your life where you are not trusting in the Lord with all your heart? Is there some area where you are depending on your own understanding? Are you avoiding what you know is God’s will in an area of your life – or are you genuinely seeking his will in everything that you’re doing right now?

Remember, God is not a heavenly “MapQuest.” God shows you which path to take in life AS you Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and AS you do not depend on your own understanding. (As you’re not leaning on your own understanding.) And AS you Seek his will in all you do, (as you do these things), God will set your path before you. He will make your way straight and smooth.

Let’s pray. As we pray and if there is an area in your life that you haven’t turned over to God in line with these verses, then let me encourage you to make that commitment right now.

Heavenly Father, may you fill us with your Spirit, and Lord, may you speak to us today, right where we are at, right now. Lord, would you show us what area in our lives we have not surrendered to you in line with these verses? Lord, where am I not trusting in you with all of my heart? Lord, where am I leaning on my own understanding? Lord, where am I not seeking your will? And Lord, maybe, where am I trying to avoid your will?

As Psalm 139:23-24 (NLT) says,
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

(Maybe just take a moment here to get real with God. Confess to him what he is impressing on your heart from these verses. Acknowledge what he may be speaking to you right now. And commit to God, right now, commit to seek him on this matter that’s in your heart – that the Holy Spirit has brought up in your heart and in your mind – commit to seek God on this matter more and more. And commit today to Trust in the Lord with all your heart.)

In Jesus’ name, amen.
