Why did Noah curse Canaan instead of Ham in Gen 9:20-25?
There are a couple of things going on here. First, Ham and his brothers had already been blessed from God, so it would be inappropriate for Noah to revoke that blessing with a curse. Second, Canaan may have been singled out because Noah saw in him the same rebellion that Ham exhibited against his father, so he was cursed instead. Third, we see a similar instance of a father's offspring being cursed for the father's sins in 2 Sam 12 and following. David's family literally fell apart because of his sin with Bathsheeba.

Gen9:20-25 , is where this story is found. Remember, I am not a biblical scholar in anyway. In fact, I'm still studying and trying to learn as much as possible. So what I'll give is my opinion. If I were to be cursed, I would really prefer that I be cursed, rather than have my curse (my fault) be inflicted on my child. So, in my opinion, Noah's curse had a much more severe affect against his offender. I cannot back that up scripturally, and am not certain if the Bible explains Noah's reasoning. I would love to hear from someone more astute on the subject. Thanks.
