What a Week!

It’s hard to put into words all that God has taken us through this past week (not to mention the past two months). Last Tuesday, Danielle (our oldest daughter) went into a difficult surgery to remove a large tumor from her spinal canal. The surgery turned out much more difficult and dangerous than the surgeons expected. The tumor was ‘vascular,’ not a tissue mass as expected. It bled profusely every time it was cut, and it had to be cut slowly and carefully because it was engulfing many critical nerves in the canal. Danielle ended up receiving 6 pints of blood during the surgery, and one more after surgery. An average woman has 8-10 pints of blood in her body, Danielle ended up losing the majority of hers.

The top two surgeons at Scripps San Diego stood for 13 hours straight working on Danielle without taking even one break. When they finally got down to the root of the tumor it was growing out of the nerve that controls the quadricep muscles in the legs. They had to damage this key nerve in order to get the tumor out. In addition, Danielle lost a large amount of spinal fluid due to the length of the surgery.

All these things have made for a very difficult first week of recovery. For the first few days Danielle had to lay perfectly flat, in order to regenerate the spinal fluid. Finally, on Friday, she stood up. Then a few more real tough days followed. But then, on Monday, she not only stood, but she walked. In fact, she walked 200 feet!

She is using a walker and assistance right now, and will be for quite a while, then maybe a cane. And then, by God’s hand and for God’s glory, Dani will be walking on her own again, as a living testimony to the power of prayer and the grace of God to bring us through the most difficult valleys. Danielle’s primary desire through all of this has been to bring God Glory. She trusts God completely, and is anxious to give Him praise in the midst of her difficulty, and in her recovery.

Thank you very, very much for all your prayers. we KNOW it was prayer and God’s supernatural hand that kept the surgeons focused for so long, and miraculously brought Dani through the surgery. And we know it will be prayer and God’s supernatural hand that will bring her through recovery and have her walking on her own again. To GOD be the GLORY. Amen!
